Yea, use the rca if it's available. My soundbar doesn't have rca Jack's.

Cable box out to sound bar in, sound bar out to tv in. All hdmi is the way to go unless you have other things like an Xbox or DVD player, then you have to get more creative. Also if it's a smart tv, you'll have to go tv optical out to sound bar optical in otherwise it won't work with the apps.

HDMI will not work.

The TV isn't old. It's only two years old and has like 6 HDMI ports.

Can I connect the cable box to the sound bar via the HDMI in of the soundbar, then use the HDMI out of the sound bar to connect it to the TV?

if you use digital optical for the soundbar the televisions volume control will also control the sound bars volume. It is the ideal way to connect a soundbar, period

No Xbox, but they have a DVD player.

Not a smart TV so the apps for that aren't a concern either.

Yes, but the soundbar can only used for CATV. If you have a DVD/BlueRay or anything else connected you cannot use the soundbar.

So optical cable sounds like the best bet.

connect dvd player to tv via hdmi. Leave soundbar connected to tv via optical. All audio that would be coming out of the tv's speakers now come out of the soundbar for every accessory added to the tv.

I am currently using optical out to my soundbar but have no volume control from the TV....any ideas as to why this would be? I had no idea that the optical did this.

Only for ease of setup. I doubt his parents are audiophiles since they are asking him to set it up for them. They won't know the difference

Yes, but if you have the RCA already its not a huge deal.

I have it set up with a reb/white cable with a 3.5mm audio cable and they said it sounds great.

The only issue is the soundbar's volume is only controlled through the soundbar remote.

That is a bad thing for them (and for anyone really).

You can configure the remote to link with the sound bar. It's in the cable box settings menu.

ETA: at least it should be and is with directv and verse.

Meuajeaux says an optical cord can make it so the volume on the TV affects the volume on the soundbar. I didn't know that or know how to set that up because I am currently using optical and don't have that feature.

You could also always train your cable remote to the soundbar.
