Just got home from work, and the D: drive is gone.

Assuming Windows:
Disk Management > Actions > (and assuming your drive doesn't show up in the list) Rescan Disks
If that doesn't work, come back.

not working, i tried to reformat it, partitioning it first and it would stop with I/O issue
Windows did something at 3:45am, this morning, and that is the issue.
on disk management it shows disk 1 and size of drive, but trying anything to it brings up i/0 error

Not sure what windows based tools work well. But you could always download the gparted.iso copy the image to a USB drive, boot from USB, it will do a good job of interrogating your disks. and if possible guide you to repairing. Just be careful to not trash your working drive :)

I would get a new drive. Even if you got that one to format agin, would you trust it?

It'ss what i figured doing as soon as i had problems.
It's not the ssd, so it's not a big cost dealio.
