Are you talking about something like a at&t microcell? I have one bc my house has radiant sheathing and my service sucks indoors. It definitely has some drawbacks but overall I need it or my phone goes straight to voicemail over half the time.

I got the one above for using at my camp. Works great, I went from no service at all to having 3 bars and being able to use the Internet whenever I want. The only downside is the phone has to be in the cradle at all times which plugs into an antenna but is a lot better than having no service at all.

T-mobile gave me one when I called about poor service at our lake house. You put an antenna in an area of the house that has signal. There is another device on the other side of the house that the antenna beams the signal to and that acts like a mini cell tower. Because you don't want the antenna getting the signal from the booster the booster dials back the broadcast of the signal until it doesn't reach the antenna so it's best to have them on opposite sides of the house for maximum coverage. Works great.
