1 person needing 2gb of data/month and will also need a new phone, ideally a Samsung S5.

Who is the best carrier for my needs? I looked at T-Mobile but they want to charge me an extra $25/month for 2 years just for the phone, which would likely leave me around $100/mo after fees. Any legit carrier have a better deal?

No. That phone sucks balls. If you want the best out there, HTC M8 or the LG G3 if you plan on going with the carrier phone plan. Sounds like you are not to keen on doing that, so there is the Google Nexus 5 that you can get off contract for around 300 bucks full phone price. It has plenty of specs on par with the higher priced phones and looks pretty sharp too. Then your carrier plan would be pretty reasonable per month. You may even be able to bump your data to 3gb per month.

I don't want this to turn into a phone discussion. I have an iPhone now and want to shop other options. The big piece of the equation here is the actual cell phone plan, I can find a phone I like anywhere.

Unfortunately all the carriers are going to this pay a "little" extra per month for your phone or pay full price up front. The days of subsidized phones are over. I wouldn't care that much is the phones were built to last more than 1 to 2 years.

VZ has an unadvertised $75 unlimited min/text 2Gb plan. You can get the phone subsidized on contract, or you can get $10 off the plan and go the "payment plan" on the phone route (EDGE).

My in-laws gave my wife and I their old iphones a few years ago and we took them to StraightTalk from ATT. My wife still has hers but I got a new LTE phone for $200 and couldn't be happier. Unlimited everything and I haven't had an issue with throttling for $50.62 after tax.

ETA: They use the same towers as ATT so the service hasn't been an issue either.

Youre the one that mentioned the phone cuz. The phone choice is relevant to the plan and whether you chose to buy one off contact or not. But it sounds like you have it all figured out. Good luck.
