Can I plug an external HD to an HTPC?

Was kinda looking into and HTPC, and an external hard drive, because I have access to Xfinity and DirecTV streaming. oh and all my d-loaded, TV shows and family movies on PLEX.
Will they play nice with each other?

Why wouldn't they play nice? It's a simple usb 3.0 connection. I'd be more worried about the nuc being able to handle 4k files correctly since it's a little less than a glorified laptop (or at least they were when I was looking a year ago or so).
