so if you followed any of my post on here, I am wrapping up a new build in the next two months and ordered my home network equipment. I will be running

dream machine

to

switch 24

to

6 APs which will have to be powered by the poe switch at the rack.

I assumed i would be using att gigabyte fiber like i have now, well I asked around on speeds people were getting in the neighborhood and they are all getting around 100mbps download which is shite.

neighbor has suddenlink gigabyte surface and he is getting 600-700 consistently.

So....needless to say, if looks like i will be going that route, which is fine as its only $43 a month all in if you provide router, which i will.

I of course want DOCSIS 3.1 and was thinking either the

motorola 8600 or 8611

or

Arris surfboad 8200

I am looking for something that is easy to configure with the Dream Machine.

let me know recommendations please.

General rule for configuration of cable modem:

1) Plug in power
2) Plug in coax
3)connect Ethernet to your router (UDM)
4) call cable company and register modem

That’s it. Most of them won’t even allow you to configure more than that. Any of those 3 would be perfect for the job, and you probably won’t notice a difference between them. I used to buy them used on Amazon for whatever was modern enough and cheap. There was a specific DOCSIS 3.0 one that I could find in the $10-20 range that I installed for about a dozen people and never had a problem.
You’re spending enough money on your network to not seem to mind buying a new one. That’s no problem, but they should be pretty agnostic and pretty invisible in your setup assuming you buy one that supports the speeds you’ll pay for.

Exactly the answer I was looking for. Seems all the docsis 3.1 are all about the same.

Did you verify your neighbors didn't have the 100Mbps Att fiber plan?

I'm skeptical. I know At&t fiber users in MO, KS & dallas and nobody sees such slow speeds on the gigabit service. Wifi speeds? Sure. many devices still connect at 150Mbps 2.4Ghz and people don't always know how to tweak the wifi settings to get full AC+ speeds but I wouldn't believe 100Mbps on a gigabit service w/out seeing a hardwired device doing it myself.

how are you running your setup? bridge mode? or did you do the proxy hack? also which att fiber modem do you have?

not doing WPA supplicant. I didnt feel like going through all that. I have the pace 5236ac and running dmz+ to the UDMPro as it doesnt have ip passthrough. changed the pace to have an ip of 192.168.2.254 as im just so used to using 192.168.1.1 as the main modem. I have set up a few different VLans so i could switch it back and make my main udmpro lan to 192.168.10.1 I dont know a ton a bout networking so idk why most of the network guys make their primary lan 192.168.10.1.

ETA: im running 2 wifi6LR aps. i feel i need one more as some microcontrolers outside have a week signal so im witing for the wifi6pro to come back in stock.

thanks for that.

Ill prolly change out the APs i ordered and eventually go pro on everything and wifi6, but i cant wait as i have to get this installed.

Appreciatte the answer.

If i do ATT im gonna request the BGW210 as that has ip pass through according to the community from what i understand. its not a thru pass through, but close enough and im not going through all the trouble to do a proxy or pay for extracted certs.

I'm not sure you can get a BGW210 anymore as they have changed the way they are doing installs. It used to be they installed the fiber:ethernet (ONT?) on the outside of the house which allowed the use of the BGW210 as a gateway. I think now they are using gateways with built-in converters so they can run the fiber all the way inside to the gateway.

Here is the setup for IP pasthrough I think. This is for the BGW320 with the built in ONT
LINK

The process is almost exactly the same for a BGW210.

i have had ATT fiber going on 6+ years. i have had 3 BGW210s, and this is my 2nd pace. FRom what i have read the bgw210's passthrough isnt much better than the dmz+ mode. Only think to ask the tech about is if you are going to get th enw bgw310 because some install are not using its onboard ONT. and if they do not install the on wall ONT, wpa supplicant is off the table.

nah fiber runs from the outside, inside to the ont on the wall. but idk if that have completely stopped this or not. i dont think ALL markets are getting it yet.

Where I am they install the ONT on the outside of the house.

they do put a box on the outside that splices the fiber. but thats not the ONT. ONT converts fiber to cat.

They might. I can't open the enclosure on the outside of my house. They might have installed that within the enclosure that looks like this:

All the houses built in my area have ethernet cable run from the central interior location to the exterior of the home. So it is easier for them to put the ONT on the outside and use the already installed ethernet instead of cutting new holes in the houses.

hm interesting i have never seen that before. that suck though. I wonder if they have had too many people crimping or cutting the fiber cable in the attic.

both times i have gotten mine installed i have helped the guy and he put it wherever i askes and we ran the fiber up and around stuff in my attic so it wasnt just hanging randomly.

Everything is run in basements up here. No hanging cables on the outside or inside the houses. The fiber comes up out of the ground into the ONT enclosure and then cat6 runs down about 3' from the enclosure and enters the basement through the rim joists. From there it typically goes to the central IT area in the basement where all coax and Cat6 from within the houses all terminate. Gives a nice central location to distribute all data and TV signals.
