I'm looking for a budget Windows laptop for basic internet use and some word/excel usage. I know most will say it doesn't matter but I'm trying to stay in the 300-500 dollar range.

Get an Acer Chromebook 14. (Obviously not a Windows laptop)

$250

Get office 365 and go to town. I love mine.

No such thing as a decent windows laptop for $300. Not new at least.
If thats your budget, I'll agree with the others and say buy a chromebook and use google docs instead of office.

I bought a Lenovo Ideapad 110S at Best Buy for 200 dollars. Not sure if its still available but it is a great little laptop. Solid state on board memory so it never runs hot, and it is super lightweight. HDMI output, bluetooth, 3 USB ports, and a SD slot. On board memory is only 32GBs but it has a microSD slot so you can add a memory card very easily. Does not have a CD ROM. I have never needed it though. Comes with Windows 10 home and a year of MS Office that I don't use. Very happy with it.

Do not ever buy a "laptop" with only 32GB of storage. It isnt a solid state drive, its cheap eMMC memory soldered onto the motherboard. Its also not enough space by default to run a W10 upgrade, which now happens twice a year.

Its basically a tablet with a keyboard, but without the optimization of a mobile OS.

I stand corrected, its not SSD. I have a 128GB microsd in mine. I have not had any issues. It is trucking along just fine. I did de-bloat it and remove all native Lenovo software. Speed has not been an issue for me as I use it as OP intends to use his.
