What's the best value laptop on the cheaper side just for browsing and maybe typing up a document or two every now and then?

Any top branded one that is around the $300 mark. Don't bother spending less than $300 on a laptop.

An older thinkpad on eBay. $1500+ laptops a few years ago that were leased to corporations, then get resold on eBay. Find one from a good seller that offers a 1 year warranty around $300.
