I'm still running a 5th generation on my work laptop and it still runs snappy even with heavy excel usage as that is what I live in at work. Being a few generations behind isn't that big of a deal, especially for an average user that doesn't do much and will most likely frick up any PC he gets since he can't seem to make them last beyond a year.

Usually, but the difference between the 7th and 8th gen is one of the largest gaps ever between gens.

The extra 2 cores on the U series chips is huge for longevity

What version of Excel is he going to use and is he going to make sure he has it setup to use those cores? Probably not.

edit: looks like this is a wash anyway since they are updating them soon as in the next week or so. WWDC starts next monday.
