I have a Yamaha VX673 receiver and just purchased a Samsung KS8000 tv and use amazon fire tv for my main viewing. Currently the audio is controlled by ARC from the TV and my receiver says PCM all the time. I have two polk floor speakers as well as a polk subwoofer and was looking for the correct setup. Anyone have advice on the best setup for this?

Is there a cable box involved?

Regardless, everything should feed to the receiver and then feed the TV with HDMI from the receiver.

The TV should be nothing more than a display. The receiver should be controlling/processing audio.

PCM---Pulse Code Modulation...basically meaning 2.1 channel stereo, not Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 Digital.

If you only have 2 speakers + the sub, PCM is going to work just fine for you. I'd still recommend plugging the fire stick into one of the Yamaha HDMI ports, and then running an HDMI out from the receiver to the TV. That will allow the receiver to decode and determine the best sound for the fire stick.

How do I connect Fire Stick to my surround sound system

Amazon says it is not supported in AV receivers so you are limited to the outputs on your television. Some HDTV's support 5.1 surround sound output through an optical or coaxial digital sound output but some will only output stereo sound. Roku and chromecast are better choices for surround sound systems as you can plug them directly into the receiver
.

If you can get surround sound to your receiver, you will need 5 speakers and a subwoofer. Your tv can not generate true 5.1 surround sound if your input is not 5.1 (or 7.1) surround sound.

Samsung UNKS8000 series review:

quote:

Connectivity
4x HDMI inputs with HDMI 2.0a, HDCP 2.2
3x USB ports (2x version 2.0, 1x version 3.0)
Ethernet (LAN) port
Optical digital audio output
Stereo audio output (minijack)
RF (antenna) input
Remote (RS-232) port (EX-LINK)

Don't know how accurate the statement is about not plugging directly into the receiver. I have my Firestick plugged directly into the receiver and it works just fine. Everything (cable box, appleTV, Firestick, whatever else) plugs into the receiver and feed the TV with an HDMI cable.

If the source is decoding the audio, an AVR may display PCM for multichannel audio. My Pioneer does this, and there's a nifty graphic on the front to show the channels actually in use. I see this whenever I use my Apple TV 4, which is limited in what it can bitstream. The only other option the ATV4 has is Dolby Surround, and my understanding is that it transcodes other formats to this lossy codec, so you WANT to see PCM when using an ATV4.

This, not sure why you would do it any other way
