Looks like I may have the option of both providers in my area shortly, and wanted to get feedback on if one is better than the other. I know with ATT, you must use their gateway and supposedly there are some issues with it, especially if you want to use your own router.

Unless I am badly mistaken anyone providing fiber to your house is going to have their own ONT that is installed at your location.

if you get gig with Eatel, and you get to use your own router, i would go with eatel and get a UDM-Pro like me.

but i dont think Eatel is fiber to the home though, is it?

It is. I just spoke with the contractor running it on the street over from mine.

Eatel was fiber to the home when I lived in Prairieville like 15 years ago.

At the time, they brought the fiber into a transceiver to convert to Cat5 and I plugged it straight to my router.

Not sure what they are doing now.

You can use your own router with AT&T.

I would go with what is cheaper. Where I am, AT&T gig is $50/month including taxes and fees.

That's incredible. Eatel is $99/mo for 1 gig up/down.

Nobody is going to go with AT&T when they also have Eatel available.

Eatel is 10,000x better than AT&T, it is not even close.

I would not switch from Eatel to AT&T even if AT&T was completely FREE.

My Eatel consistently tests faster than the advertised speed that I pay for.

Many AT&T customers are lucky to test at half of the advertised speed they pay for.

I have always used my own router with Eatel.
Eatel is 100% fiber to the home.

Eatel, support the local business. I don't know about AT&T but eatel is unlimited data.

I had eatel in walker and when AT&T was trying to get me to switch I called eatel and they reduced my rate to closer to AT&T. Eatels customer service is top notch.

on the back end... unless you do a wpa_supplicant with a USG or UDM. but the easy response is no, you cant.

a 50% cost decrease is a big selling factor.

I have seen similar comments but I tested a unifi router a couple months ago downstream from my BGW210 and I get full speeds hardwired and wireless. The unifi also had full control of NAT/firewall/port forwarding with no issues. I'm sure there are folks having issues but for whatever reason I was not able to find them.

I ended up sending the unifi back because the wireless speeds were not any better than the BGW210 router with the airties extender for my devices.

so you ARE still using the gateway. Like i said.

yes you can ip passthrough (BGW210) or DMZ+(5268ac) ahead of other routers. And in the past they did throttle those routers down 50%, see my thread from 4-5 years ago). But firmware updates have fixed that issue.

You are still withheld to the capacity of the gateway, i forget what spec it is, that is way over my head in networking. Which is why wpa_supplicant is the best option (im not doing this yet) until ATT allows people to connect directly to the ONT.

to each is own, but the lack of network customization in ATTs gateways is shocking compared to enterprise level Ubiquity. I had issues with the gateways not connecting 2.5g devices in my IoT collection and now setting up a IoT network and WLAN just for these devices.

Yep...this pretty much sums it up.

Why go through the headache of dealing with AT&T if you don't have to? When you have a problem with your service, which you will inevitably have at some point with either AT&T or EATEL, good luck dealing with AT&T.

And this is the main reason the OP should choose them over AT&T when the internet service itself is comparable in speed and price.

AT&T customer service is practically non-existent.

I'm not a huge fan of AT&T the company but this does vary by region and locale. When neighbors cut my fiber (multiple times), they are out either the same day or next morning to run new fiber. When my gateway was fried by lightning on a friday night I had a new gateway by noon the next day.

I'd personally rather have a local fiber provider that is one street over (CCI) but at&t was the only option when our house build was complete and despite my disdain for At&t, the fiber internet has kept me completely satisfied for 5+ years now.

I dont know if all of Louisiana is terrible for at&t customers but I have to think there are some areas that are doing well for their customers.

not to get too nitpicky but I said you can use your own router. I did not say you could use your own gateway or choose not to use theirs. Why does it matter if you still need a gateway device as long as your own router can operate at full speed and have full security control? The gateway is completely transparent to your network.

Every fiber service I have had has always had at least one piece of hardware that had to be provided by them and not by myself.

I work for a fiber provider in North Louisiana and this is the case with us. We install an ONT (Optical Network Terminal) to terminate the fiber. The ONT will have an ethernet handoff to our router or the customer's router if they choose to go that route.
