So I have ATT uverse and use a Arris BGW210 modem/router combo.. it works very good on both Ethernet connected and wifi… well in the bedroom that’s the Longest distance away from the modem/router combo (my oldest sons room) the wifi signal drops off.. everything still works and connects but when he plays games it sometimes lags.

Now I know I could get wifi extenders, or a router to solve this issue but this is where my question comes in

I have a 2nd Arris BGW210 from ATT works perfect and I am wondering is there a way to set that 2nd one up as just a pure router to increase the signal strength in that bedroom

I think you’re asking if you can use this as an Access Point (router takes the signal from the ISP and talks back and forth from the internet to the stuff inside the house. I don’t say this to correct you, but so that when you read about it you may have a better way to find what you’re looking for).

So, if it can be done, you want to set it as an access point, I can’t walk you through page by page or turn you to a guide for this- I looked.
You want your main router to have an Ethernet out going into one of the LAN (NOT WAN) ports on the secondary one. If you can’t get Ethernet from primary—>secondary, just buy a wireless mesh system. You won’t be able to do anything useful.

On the secondary one, before you do anything else, boot up, connect to it, set an IP in the subnet of the primary one but outside the DHCP scope (192.168.1.2 would generally be an acceptable one). Reboot it. Wait.
Then go to 192.168.1.2 (or whatever) and turn off the DHCP server
Give the network a name. Usually if you make it the same name, your devices can connect to either, but they sometimes have trouble switching from one to the other. If you name them something different, You just need to remember to switch from network 1 to network 2 based on where you are in the house- in most places it will be fine to just stay on Network 1.

I’m not sure you can do that with this device. You should be able to, but they’re notoriously finicky. And wireless Mesh Mode? Forget about it.

no the main unit is the router, you need an access point.

you should be asking if you can set it up as an access point. and I dont think that 210 has an AP mode. BUT you can get a cheap router and turning that into an AP. Are you wanting to run a cable to that room?

No cable to the room, honestly just trying to be cheap lol… my dad recently got rid of att uverse and his 210 like mine was purchased not monthly rented… so he gave it to me… and I figured if there was a way to turn the second 210 into a access point I could put the 2nd 210 near the furthest bedroom and my son could access the 2nd 210

Before I went and bought a wireless mesh system or anything for this I’ll just go purchase a decent router lol… I was honestly hoping it was going to be something simple I could jump on my laptop change a few settings and bam on…

And I know a lot of people hate on the Att Arris 210 but I can honestly say I rarely have a issue and when I do, unplug it for 2 mins and plug it back in and fixed… and between both my kids on Xbox my wife on her phone or laptop, me streaming or on my ps5 plus the 4 ring cameras all connected plus the various other things hooked to the wifi at anygiven time there is like 23 devices on wifi and lot are pulling, and we never really have issues that 210 keeps up… only my oldest son may get a little laggy at times but that’s bc his wifi connection is the furthest away

There is a way to setup a wireless bridge between two routers (with the same ssid) I've done it. But I always found it fidgety. We had a security dvr in the one spot in the house where they didn't run Cat5 when they built the house 20+ years ago. Ultimately, I ended up running a Cat6 cable up to the attic and down to the basement and into my panel/switch.

Just youtube wireless bridge.

2 issues.... 1. the firmware of the 210... i do not believe it can be AP only mode. 2. If it could... you would need a hard wire to it for it to be an AP. wireless APs are called Mesh systems.

well before you buy anything you need to understand that ATT requires you to use the 210 for the security certificate.

2 things you can do.

1. Use the 210 as the router, and put a mesh system in AP mode behind it.
2. put the 210 in IP Passthrough mode, and use a new router. I have messed with 210s for years and this is hit or miss. some work and some cut your bandwidth by half.

are you talking directly about the 210? because the 210 is a shite piece of hardware with even shittier firmware. I despise ATT for requiring it.
