I've had a firetv in my living room for about a year. I love it. I even had a firestick in my bedroom and I liked that too.

I just hooked up my appletv (free with my DTV Now purchase) last night and here's my review...

They both work. AppleTV has the discovery channel app that FireTV doesn't. Since I don't have a dvr right now I depend on those stand alone apps to catch shows that I miss. So its nice having both.

I favor the firetv simply because they've done some really minor things that it surprises me that apple hasnt done. For example, when you are prompted to type in your email, firetv gives options of like gmail and yahoo and a couple others and when you click it, it autofills the "gmail.com". appletv still makes you type all of that out. That annoys the shite out of me for some reason . Ultimately I don't think you can go wrong with either. But there definitely isn't $50 worth of difference if you ask me. I'd take FireTV over AppleTv all day.

I have both and prefer the Apple TV but it's definitely not worth the extra $50, I only got mine through the DirecTV Now promo.

Damn. The discovery channel app would be one of the main apps I'd use

You do realize with the new generation Apple TV, no typing is required, right? The voice to text button works flawlessly, and it also works within any app...not just Apple based apps.

Here are a few more tips and tricks:

Double click the home button to seamlessly scroll back and forth between apps...you don't have to back out to a home screen to select app.

Hold down the home button to turn off the Apple TV.

There are a few other little things here and there, but those two are the main ones that makes life easier.

Also, I highly recommend using the voice to text feature, it's extremely smooth.

This is useful. Admittedly I don't read instructions. I feel like I'm tech savvy enough to figure things out. Since I just started using it last night I hadn't even experimented with that. I just tried using it like my firetv saying the name of an app and it didn't find it. So I moved on to manually finding it.

Yea this was weird. When I searched FireTV I didn't find an app. I thought surely Discovery has one. Apparently its only on Apple. Sucks.

I have both. Have been using Apple TV since gen 2. Have a gen 3 box and 2 gen 4 boxes at the house. Bought a fire tv about a month ago.

Personally, I like the fire tv a little better since I have prime. You can't get true 4K on the Apple TV, either....but you can on fire tv. I like the fire remote better. The recent UI overhaul looks more like a mesh of Netflix and Apple TV. It's ok.

The one thing I don't like is that I haven't been able to voice search Netflix with fire.

Aside from KODI being on the FIre TV, I enjoy the Apple TV UI more

You can use Kodi on the new Apple TV but it's more complicated.

How much more complicated?

I have been reading the few threads on this subject to pop up lately. Right now I have U-verse (which is great), but I can't justify the $120 anymore when all we watch is sports and Big Bang reruns 90% of the time. I also have a lot purchased on iTunes so I was trying to avoid going to firetv for kodi but didn't think there was another option.

I have both. Got the free Apple TV with DIRECTV now. I'm a Apple fan, but the Fire TV is much better and it's not even close.

As someone who owns a bunch of Apple products I really don't like the new Apple TV. It's fancy and user interface is, well, user friendly but it is overpriced (of course) and I cannot stand the touch sensitive remote. I bought a Fire TV and never looked back. It's worth every dollar.

ETA: the real killer of the Apple TV for me was lack of Amazon Prime app.

I just hesitate over the seamless ability to mirror my phone/laptop when I need to
