How difficult is it to get one and can you learn on your own or is it better to take a class or join a club?

There are three levels of Ham licenses - the first two are pretty easy to obtain and the highest level is a bit more difficult. All three levels are composed of multiple choice questions chosen from a larger pool of questions - All the questions and answers are readily available on the internet, and there are free websites out there that will do a very good job of getting you ready to pass the tests.

That said - if that is all you do to get your license, you will have a license without really knowing that much about Ham radio as the questions are generally on very specific things without going into the reasoning behind the answers. If you can join a club and find a good Elmer, you will get much more out of Ham radio!!!

That's kind of how I did it in high school. It also helped my father was already a Ham operator who helped.

I haven't been into it in quite some time but if you reach out to a club I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you study for an exam. Nice part is morse code is no longer a requirement at all.

Have been a Ham since the late 80s. Powered down last move a few years ago and haven't been active since.

Either find a local group or lookup local Volunteer Examiners in your area on the W5YI website.

Pretty painless to get started these days....

I ordered one of those cheapish Chinese handheld radios just to play with to see if it's something I might like. Any advice on how to start tinkering with it?

I've been a Ham since 1955 and currently hold an Amateur Extra Class license.

There are ham radio clubs in most cities - google and see if you can find one in your area. They will set you on the course to obtain your license.

Per Adam Curry, you should start with a $25 walkie and you should be able to pass with some light studying. I'm going to start on my tech license soon.
