Almost got scammed by "Google"

Got a call yesterday from someone claiming to be Google. I've received these calls before trying to sell me S.E.O. stuff. They represent themselves as bonafide Google reps but in reality, they're not. They called from (914) 727-6355.
Same deal yesterday. I even pressed them about being a bonafide Google employee or just repping Google products. They assured me they were Google employees. They were VERY convincing. The purpose of the call (so they said) was to verify that all the info on my Google Maps page was correct. They went down the list - address, phone number, hours of operation, etc. Everything was correct. Then to make sure my tel. # was correct, they wanted to text me a "Verification Number" to read back to them. ***RED FLAG***. She even sent me to a "representative in our verification department". They were trying to hijack my Google Voice number. I heard of this before (thankfully), and I called them on it. The guy in the "Verification Department" quietly hung up.
Just sharing... beware.. especially if you have a Google Voice number.

This is an interesting one because they do actually try and get businesses to verify the information that shows up in google maps is correct. There is a problem with ghosting where people create fake business locations. You end up with businesses being listed in locations where other businesses already exist.
No great way to handle it from Google's side.

Over the phone with a human? I've seen some auotmated calls over your Google local business listing, but the only phone call I've ever received from a human Google employee unsolicited has been from my Google Ads rep.
If they aren't trying to schedule a call to talk about your Google Ads account and they sound like they're in a crowded call center in India, there's a 99% chance it's not actually Google.

Are these legit? I always just hangup because I know the info on my listing is correct because, you know, I entered it.

You'll also see this same scam on Craigslist, but all by txt.
Moral of the story: whenever you hear "verification code", beware.

Weird bc I'm recently getting calls and text messages with links to verify info. It's BS.
This is all since my newest security update on pixel 2 xl.

We get about 15 calls a week from them, it’s very annoying.

When I verified a business Address with Google they mailed me a verification code to the business address.
