Bought a 4K tv on Cyber Monday and need to know what to do next to get 4K service from Direct TV. Do they just swap out a box or do I need to add a 4K tier to my current plan? Is there any cost involved?

They will just swap out the box for a compatible 4k receiver. They will probably try to get you to pay for it. I just got one about a month ago and when they said i would have to pay for the box and installation I said no thanks I'll just get a new service. They quickly said they could do it for free. Currently there are only 4 channels that are 4k and I believe 2 of them are pay per viw

The most 4K content you're going to get is from Netflix or youtube.

If we are talking about the DTV dish, there are specific channels in the guide marked as 4k.

depends on how long you've had DTV...you may have an older satellite dish that has to be upgraded as well as a newer receiver...
I have the genie with 2 4k clients but hate the the main genie cannot put out 4k to the TV it is attached to...only the genie clients can do the 4k...which sucks because when someone is watching the same game in the room where the main genie is, the game is 5 or so seconds ahead of the clients...you hear them scream yay! or aww shite! and it kind of ruins the game in the living room where the client or 4k client is.

They must be doing some insane compression to do 4k over satellite. I bet it's pretty arse quality over even Netflix 4K, which is also compressed.

Everything is compressed, except for Blu Ray (I think)

BluRay is also compressed. OTA 1080i is the only uncompressed TV we get, I think. There are varying levels of compression, though. DTV already compressed 1080 more than wireline providers. Not sure how they're pushing 4K. Suppose it's just very expensive for them.

the only place you are seeing quality 4K channels is in like the UK if you have Virgin or BT which is over fiber.
