Womens soccer - team from Great Britain

more of an olympic topic, but thought you guys would know better. Why is the womens team called Great Britain? Does England not field a WNT?

Because England does not compete as a singular country at the Olympics. The UK is represented by Great Britain. Outside of the Olympics, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales each compete individually in FIFA sanctioned events.

This year only they are playing under the United front of Great Britain rather than England/N. Ireland/Wales/Scotland in honor of London hosting the games.
Unfortunately the FA's of 2 of the sub countries told their players (at least on the mens side) not to participate (Or else... grrrr) to protect the sovereignty of their ability to field their own teams in later competitions. I believe the women's team didn't take this approach so women from all 4 are on the team.

Wrong.
England has never competed on its own. It has always competed as Great Britain. Ireland is the only UK nation that usually competes on its own.

Yea but the men have never competed as individual countries in the Olympics, with the exception of Ireland.
