Reality is that Kenny Cooper will never play for the US in the World Cup.

Signed,
Herculez Gomez (in 2010)

Countersigned,
Jimmy Conrad (in 2006)
Pablo Mastroeni (in 2002)

Remember that Mastroeni had 8 caps prior to '02, none in WC qualifiers, and had no starts prior to the opening game against Portugal.

Conrad had 12 caps prior to WC 2006, and STARTED games in Germany.

Edson Buddle went SEVEN YEARS between appearances for the US.

Never say never.

Davies is the BEST American striker. He was just taking a break.

If he's healthy and doing what he was doing pre-crash, then this isn't even a discussion.

The problem is there is a new generation of talent that is younger and decidely more athletic than Da Coop. Injuries are the only way I see him making a WC squad. I don't harbor any hatred to Da Coop, but he has a tough row to hough.

Meh. One (Findley) was a system choice. We needed a wheels forward. Charlie Davies went out drinking, Jeff Cunningham and Eddie Johnson played themselves off the island. There WERE no other options for the "speed" forward. (Arnaud? Quaranta?) Findley shouldn't have played, but I can't argue with his inclusion.

Gomez was on fire in spring 2010. With limited other options, why not? I think if he had played better in the pre-WC friendly versus Australia (he missed a sitter, and had a really shitty wide-open pass that cost us another goal) he would have continued riding his hot streak.

Given the other options (none) what else could you do? Bring more midfielders?

Play Deuce up top? In his club role? Play Holden in the middle and not Rico? Bradley in Rico's role with the Hawk being creative? We beat Ghana with that line-up.

I'm not saying those guys should have played at all, but you have to have out and out forwards on the team, and those were the "best" choices.

I would have brought:

Altidore
Buddle (Altidore clone)
Eddie Johnson (terrible, but fast and familiar with the other players)
Gomez (goal scoring streak)

This is all assuming Ching was not fully fit.

I would have played 4-5-1 with Altidore up top, and Dempsey and/or Donovan providing support, I think.

You are right, because he wouldn't be in the MLS if it weren't for the crash.

No doubt, and Holden is our most creative center of the pitch player.

Scoring a goal from a free kick doesn't automatically make someone not look like a lumbering oaf for the rest of the 2nd half.

If they ever have, ever will or ever could pull on the shirt, I root for them all the same.

Really?

Because at 26, Edson Buddle was nobody.

Kenny Cooper had won the MLS golden boot by 24, he'd had two 10+ goal seasons, Edson Buddle was wasting away in Toronto or Columbus. He wasn't even on the USMNT radar until last spring.

Edson is currently a much better player, but a couple of seasons can make a world of difference.

The problem for Coop is the young talent in the pipeline. I am glad he is back in the MLS. But, at this point he is at best the fifth or sixth option for the USMNT.

Didn't Cooper only play like 13 games in 2 years ? That is what really fricked him. If we are building for the future, I doubt there is room for him on the USMNT roster. I think if Davies gets back to 100% then you add Altidore, Agudelo, Buddle, and Bunberry to the mix. Adios, Cooper.

Thank God, too.

He's not the kind of forward that a World Cup challenger would bring onto their squad. But, one day he may hit a brilliant run of form at the right time, and boom!

He's Edson Buddle.

Or he could play like shite, and get relegated to the bench of his MLS team, still make the World Cup team and Boom! he's Robbie Findley.

not only that but we would've had a legitimate speedy forward at the World Cup. Really think it would've been a huge factor for us.

Only player in the current american cycle who combined lethal pace with a solid to above average touch. Also, much better finisher than most of the others we have.
