I thought of Banega but didn't think he sounded like a likely option. Maybe I'm assuming he'd cost more than he actually would.
I'd figure anything in the 20 million pound range would be serious overkill for Banega. There are other options at the controlling playmaker position if Modric leaves. No one immediately as good as him, but plenty of players who can do a job. With the money left over 'arry can waste the rest of the money on an English striker/CB.

According to Phil McNulty, Liverpool have agreed to a fee for Downing who will now undergo a medical.

Good. Glad we Arsenal isn't going over pay for a slightly above average winger.

Attn: Leauxgan,
Could you please update your predicted Liverpool XI now that they have added another midfielder?

You'll have to wait awhile. Wenger doesn't do anything quick. I feel dumb for having gotten my hopes up before the summer. I should have been bracing for the eventual disappointment better.

It's been frustrating that's for sure, but I'm trying to stay optimistic.

Also, Fulham signed John Arne Riise away from Roma.
The "away" here implies that Roma wanted to keep him. Riise's one of my favorite players ever but the club made it clear that at 31 he wasn't part of their plans going forward and worked to get him to Fulham to play with his brother.
Riise should be a very good signing for Fulham. Definite upgrade even if he's losing a step and there's probably no classier and better clubhouse guy in football. With Riise and Dempsey, I'm definitely going to be a cheering Fulham on this year.

Read a rumor that if Vidal doesn't sign an extension this summer he'll be sold to either Arsenal or Bayern. One of us will be a happy man in August, Hendo. I'll bet its you.

He wants to play for Jupp Heynckes. He's said he wants to go to Bayern. I don't know if he'd sign a contract with anyone else.

Sneijder update

oh well, that's over, United did get a good haul this season though

Manchester United hope to complete the £35million transfer of Wesley Sneijder after agreeing terms of around £190,000 a week with the Inter Milan midfielder. Sneijder was forced to compromise on his initial wage demands of £250,000-a-week, but an agreement has been struck and a deal is close to completion.

The Daily Mirror concurs with the Mail over Sneijder's imminent signing, echoing the £35million fee and reported £190,000 weekly wage packet. The Daily Express isn't quite so certain, however, claiming that Sir Alex Ferguson will have to offer Nani to sweeten the deal for Internazionale.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has denied any interest in Wesley Sneijder amid reports of a £35million deal being close.

"I keep reading about this, there's absolutely nothing at all to that [reports of United's interest in the player]," he told ESPN Soccernet Press Pass. "First of all I don't think Inter are prepared to sell him anyway.

Germany defender Jerome Boateng has quit Manchester City to sign a four-year deal with Bayern Munich, the German league giants confirmed on Thursday.
The 22-year-old hastily left the City squad which was training in Los Angeles on Thursday, but is expected to arrive in Munich on Friday or Saturday for the medical examination.
He is then set to start pre-season training with Bayern on Sunday with the German league set to resume on Friday August 5. His transfer to Munich is worth around 13.5 million euros, reports SID, an AFP subsidiary.
"There were intense negotiations and it took a long time before we could get this transfer to a satisfactory conclusion," said Bayern chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
"With Jerome Boateng, we have our favourite candidate for the central defence at Bayern Munich."

I'll believe this transfer when I see the press conference. I don't think Sneijder's going anywhere for any price.
I thought that Sneijder transfer was English daily paper selling rumor from the get go. Not that it can't happen but there just seemed to be so little reason from Inter's standpoint to sell him.
Sneijder had already said a few weeks ago in response to another rumor that he and his wife loved Milan and he was happy playing at Inter.
English papers reported he was unhappy at being moved out wide in Inter's new formation, while Italian papers the same day were showing photos of Sneijder working in a false punta position instead of wide.
As a Roma fan I would've liked to see it happen but it just doesn't seem to have a logic other than linking Man U to superstar transfer will sell lots of papers.
But, I suppose, all these denials and lack of logic means that the deal will happen now.
