I have seen a total of four soccer matches in my life, with one being the other day when Portugal played czech republic. I have zero knowledge about the sport but enjoy watching teams like portugal play when they are pushing the ball.

I told a friend of mine I like portugal and cant wait to see them play wednesday. He came back with "they're going to get their arse kicked" and I said whatever. He then asked me if I wanted to bet 100 dollars that they lose, I said no because I have no way of knowing... He then said he would bet 100 to my 50 that they lose.

I took the bet. Am I losing 50 bucks?

Not the WORST bet in the world, but the odds all point to Spain.

I'm thinking that you should plan on losing that 50 dollars. Never say never but Spain is a cut above Portugal.

Yeah, Spain is the definite favorite, but I wouldn't count out Ronaldo.

I may be wrong here, didnt espn say something about portugal beating spain earlier or something?

Does this matter in soccer?

They may have beaten them in a friendly but they haven't beaten Spain in a recent major tournament. Spain won Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.

If it was a friendly, either team might have played without key starters.

Spain seems to be riding coat tails at this point. Its still going to be a pretty big uphill battle but its absolutely possible. They are not the team that won the World Cup two years ago and the cracks are starting to show.

If Spain goes up 1-0, they'll tiki taka your friend to sleep ... stay up and then steal $50 from his wallet while he's out and you should break even.

Well, like others said, it's not impossible. It wouldn't be a huge shock but it would be an upset.

Its not as bad as you think. If CRon can get more touches on the ball than he has been, I think they can do it. I just don't know how disciplined the Portuguese back line is. Its all going to come back to that.

EDIT: Then again I think every game against Spanish football comes down to that. See Chelsea/Barca. Discipline in holding defensive shape is the only way to beat them.

Remember, all it takes is one lucky bounce, deflection, or hard foul to change the game.

$50 v. $100 is alright

Your friend is a dick for trying to take advantage of you

If Portugal can find Ronaldo's runs, they will make things very interesting. Portugal won't be the same team that you fell in love with, though

Its awesome you said this, because he is a lurker and will come across this surely.

If Portugal wins, Ronaldo will surely be my favorite soccer guy for sure. I also will be watching more and more soccer from here out because the more I watch and learn, the more entertaining it is. At first its kind of boring, but as you watch and see the teams that can move the ball, you see what it can be.

I actually think that Portugal has played really well. They came out of the group of death and Pepe and Bruno Alves have been the best CB pairing in the tournament. Nani and CR7 have the speed to worry Spain on the flanks. I actually think they will win.

I wouldn't personally go that far, but I think they have a lot better chance than most make it out to be. this game is more like a 50/50 IMO.
