I think he has amazing potential at CB. His size, speed, and ability on the ball, theoretically, make him a good prospect at CB. But his managers seem to want him further forward, so unless he fails there, I don't think we will get to see him on defense.

Apparently the line was playing too high for Hyndmann's liking when he was at CB.

He might have been just too good to be just an LB in the MLS. We will see how this season plays out. If Shea doesn't perform at LW, I think Hughes will give him a shot at LB.

Well if he was positionally wayward as a CB, that can be fixed. He was only 20 or so when he was at CB, so maybe his move up the field was to mitigate any recklessness rather than an indication of potential ability?

Playing high up the field isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as you're pressing a man and not just wandering off. Like I alluded to before, Boateng played pretty damn high for Bayern last year because he was fast enough to recover if he got beat and Dante was good enough to cover the space. I'm a huge fan of Besler, if they got the chance to play together enough it could potentially work.

Also does anyone know how Tim Ream is doing? He could be a left sided option. I remember watching a Bolton game nearly two years ago, and Ream was caught upfield in an advanced position on the left side after a free kick, and he lobbed a ball that either created a goal or led to a goal scoring opportunity. Not that this one random memory is any indication of his ability to play left back.

Playing a high line also necessitates consistent pressure from the midfield. It could be Dallas was out of wack in midfield which made Shea's positioning suspect. Could be a lot of reasons.
In the future, I'm all for playing any naturally left footed player on the left side, since those players are a premium.

I'm naturally left footed. I'd be willing to dedicate my life to training for the USMNT. I would do that.

I think that it's much less "speed" and more his ability to cover a lot of ground.
Maybe it's just my imagination, but he seems kind of slow to me, especially in smaller spaces. That would worry me as a defender.

If I recall, Shea showed out on some tour of Europe after the WC as a CB, then when Dallas moved him there, he did poorly, got like a red card in one of his first games.

As an FCD season ticket holder and President of the Brek Yo Self fan club, I can tell you that he did in fact play some CB at FCD. As previously mentioned, he was red carded in I believe his first game there on an awful call (go figure with the shite MLS refs). He also got a little time at LB. His future with the USMNT is on the wing. When playing his current role of super sub, you cannot ask for much more out of a substitute. From knocking in game winners to dumping in perfect crosses from the wing, he does it all. You bitches need to Brekkenize!!!

Honestly, if Shea could be a serviceable LB, I would love to push FJ up to the wing. I think FJ is a better winger than Shea, and Shea's ability to track back on D, and make a speedy recovery when beat, in addition to his physique and technique, make him an ideal LB imo.
I see Shea a bit like Andy Najar. Either the dude can be a good LW (if he figures out how to regain the form that made him so good at FCD) or he can be a very good LB.
My problem with Shea is that his decision making is pretty terrible and he has some serious mental lapses, which means putting him at CB is probably a bad idea, especially at the international level.
I would like to see what he can do at Stoke on the wing first, and if that doesn't play out then at LB.
It would be nice if he looked up to snuff, but I've yet to really be impressed by Shea in his play for the Nats.
