I'm surprised no one has ever had a forward just stand near the other team's 18 for the entire game and not make a play on any through ball or really move until possession has been achieved behind the last defender. It's my understanding that if the striker doesn't make an attempt to get any ball until after possession is established behind the last defender, then it is not offsides. Am I just liberalizing the rule too much here?

Let's say the blue team is on the ball, the red team is defending and they have a striker chilling on top the 18.

Red team's center mid wins the ball back and plays a nice through ball to the left mid who gets in behind the defense. The striker on top of the 18 makes no play for the ball, not even a step toward it.

The left mid collects the ball clear of the defenders and send a ball to the striker who has been there.

It's my understanding that if the striker doesn't make a play for the ball and if the midfielder would get the ball past the last defender, he could pass it to the striker who is no longer offsides. Am I off base here?

in your example, that red guy just waiting for the pass is still offsides. i think that's where you are confused

The striker in your last example is still offside because he is closer to the goal line than both the ball and last defender.

Yeah, he'd have to make a move back after the midfielder was behind the last defender to where he was behind the ball, but he wouldn't be marked offsides on the initial pass.

Yeah, I know. I got lazy with the pictures. But as the midfielder was running past the defenders, he could come back behind the ball.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. They explained it much better than I did.

That article makes it very clear. I see what you mean now. Makes a lot of sense.

No.

And no.

Passive offside.

And it may work once, but then the other team would ignore him and you'd be playing 10 v 11.

Yes he was. He changed the last picture to clarify what he meant.

Yeah, the first picture was me doing a lazy Mexican impression. I changed it to clarify. But yeah, I think a lot of teams would have trouble dealing with it. There are certain caveats though. You need a really speedy winger to receive the through balls and another striker who is willing to do the dirty work i.e. holding the ball up and pestering defenders.

It's not offside unless he makes a play for the ball or one of his teammates attempts to play him the ball. And like Sheep said, you'd soon be playing 10v11.

The picture I had at first was offsides because I didn't draw it right. He was playing the ball ahead of him, making it offsides. The striker would have to be behind the ball.

I was just making a general statement and I was too lazy to scroll back up to respond to Hendo's OP.
