What is the timeline for this? I'm not familiar with MLS expansion draft rules. Is there some sort of deadline for Dax to decide whether to sign with Portland or not? Assuming of course that they take him. Which they should.

Dax should go to Belgium, Denmark or Sweden for a year or two. After that he could play in the EPL or perhaps the Bundesliga. He looked really good last night.

He's a past and future USMNT player. A WC 2014 possibility. I'd be surprised if he doesn't make the 30.

I agree. He is IMO beyond the MLS. Dax was the second best player on the field last night.

I wouldn't consider any of the DP's highlights simply b/c their salaries will be too steep for an expansion team to snap up.

It's a highlight because it's a name.

Bitch.

FWIW. I think there are a lot of USMNT players that could see WC2014.

Tristan Bowen may make the 30 too. I MIGHT can see him over McCarty for 2014.

There are rumors of Blaise Nkufo to Vancouver (where his wife lives)

I don't see Portland going after a DP (especially one already in MLS).

We traded away allocation money (cap space) for an international player spot. We're likely going to try to build with a young team.

Dax McCarty would be an incredible steal, if he's not going to Europe.

That sound you hear is the Portland GM's boner hitting the underside of the table at seeing Dax McCarty's name.

Of these, Eduardo and Geovanni and probably safe based on contracts. I'd least like to lose Beitashour and Ring. While we're pretty deep in CM, I like what Ring brings to the table. Beitashour was fantastic early in the year before injury, and he offers some talent at the back that we'll need, especially if we lose Corrales and/or Ward.

So if Portland takes McCarty first, who is Vancouver going to snap up with their first pick?

He's certainly a talent. McCarty is measurable, though. He's several years older, he's a ton like Jose Torres. That could hurt him.

I'd have to go with Nyassi. Of course if they pick Nkufo, then Nyassi can be protected. That might be Seattle's plan anyways.

The real question is whether or not Vancouver wants Nkufo.

If they don't, you have to take the young winger with upside.

I don't think McCarty is a final 23 for the World Cup. Not with the depth we have in midfield. It's too early to tell, but I don't see it.

I don't know either, but he's 23.

McCarty is a solid MLS player, but I don't think his skill set will transfer over to the international game. I think that I'm going to do a detailed depth chart of our player pool before the Gold Cup.

This. He's a smaller version of Beckerman. He'll get some caps, and contribute some, but he's not a full international player.

Two points:

A. Kits will be Adidas
B. Don't put too much stock into the list of unprotecteds. The majority of those players are expirings/movings. I expect Vancouver and Portland to follow the Seattle / Philly model of about 10 selections, and build the rest of the roster via free agency.

The players selected will be more of a salary puzzle than a positional puzzle.

In a lot of instances, there may be "wink and nod" deals with other GMs to select/not select certain players in return for other compensation.

Hou- Samuel Appiah

Is on a developmental contract, if Portland were to pick him he would be given a senior contract and John Spencer would have to be really high on him to do that. Appiah was considered a project when Houston drafted him last year which isn't good for a player that will be 26 in March.

I would like to add that, per another soccer message board I lurk on, the official unveiling of Timbers uni's will be on December 9 around 2-4 PM (pacific time).
