The USMNT kicked off the 2002 World Cup with a first-half explosion and hold on for dear life 3-2 win over Portugal.

I remember staying up with my dad for a couple of these matches, but I don't remember watching this goal...I remember hearing about it on ESPN later in the day.

awesome match. can't believe it's been that long. i remember waking up early to watch mexico/italy and staying up late to watch argentina/england. and for anyone not following the sport or usmnt at the time, you missed out on a fricking epic moment when we kicked mexico's arse in the knockout stages.

and if fricking el hadji diouf could regain his 2002 world cup form for only a season i will fap with sandpaper.

I was over the moon, but harbored no hopes of our winning. This was a much ballyhooed Portugal side, all at a ´now or never´age, and I thought we were going to get steamrolled.

I also thought we were NOT going to pull it out. It was an amazing match, and people were freaking out everywhere. People I only know visually (we´d never met), were congratulating me on the win.

McBride's initial header on that corner kick was so damn nice it deserved a goal on its own. O'brien almost ripped through the net when he volleyed that rebound in though.

Gah, those two guys were some bad MFer's for the national team.

I watched all of that one. Pride, baby, pride.
