I know it has been discussed before, and I was on the wall before, but now I am firmly for it and here is why:

Meaningful Competiton and Copa America
I only consider matches where there is something at stake meaningful competition. Right now we and Mexico play these games against shite countries and wait until the next Gold Cup final or World Cup group stage. International friendlies aren't meaningful. Sending a B-squad to Copa America isn't meaningful. Combine CONCACAF and CONMEBOL and now we have meaningful matches in Copa America qualifying, Copa America, World Cup qualifying and World Cup. That is roughly as many meaningful games as European powers get.

Copa America televised in US
Merca loves the World Cup. And it's not just to watch Team USA. Mercan's will wake up early and watch a Switzerland/Chile match. Because Mercan's love the big stage and meaningful competition where something significant is at stake. And after the World Cup Mercan's want more. The Gold Cup itself does not satisfy. We wait until the next US Mexico match. ESPN would be all over the television rights to broadcast Copa America matches featuring a US and Mexican A-squads take on South America's best. No more first emphasis on Gold Cup and sending youth teams to get cut to pieces by Messi, Neymar and Suarez. Besides, who wouldnt want to see more Messi, Neymar and Suarez in the summer on ESPN in HD? And we won't even have to wake up early in the morning to watch either.

I understand it is a bold move, and not one without considerable risk of not qualifying for a World Cup. But I'm confident we would still make it. We play up and down to our competition. I think we can defeat weaker South American teams in South America in the same manner and frequency we beat Central American team's in C.A. And with CONCACAF World Cup bids being merged with CONMEBOL I think we would be alright.

Right now we play in the CONCACAF which is a two-team crap confederation. CONCACAF = Boise St & TCU-era WAC. and frick the WAC.

Are you a bitter Wisconsin fan?

Anyway, I like the idea but I admittedly have no idea what all the financial/logistical arguments against it would be.

How many spots would this new confederation have in the WC? 8?

This is my question. Fewer than 8 and I doubt the US could qualify.

Heres what you do... You take the amount cocacaf currently has and you add them to the amount CONMEBOL currently has. And that gives you your total. If it's 8 then its 8. Fwiw I think US still qualifies.

I like the idea and in the long run it would make American soccer better but yeah travel cost would keep it from happening, but it wouldn't be as spread out as the Asian confederation.

Or FIFA laughs at you and gives more spots to UEFA or Asia or an auto to Oceania.

How about that plus a play-in with Oceania? 8 1/2

That's what I'm afraid of. Although the Copa America could become a gigantic tournament if this happened. 50 member associations, with some big soccer powers included. I don't think CONMEBOL would be interested in this though, as they have 4.5 spots now, which a lot of their teams have strong chances of making the WC.

Copa América is a gigantic tournament. It is the world's second best tournament.

In importance yes, but not in size. It's only ten teams. I meant in size.
