We just can't play without width if we have no passing quality up the center of the field. Our second best passer up the middle was Geoff Cameron. If we're going to use our fullbacks for width then make sure you play fullbacks who can provide that and defense (Cherundolo, Lichaj). If we're going to call in Joe Corona, then use him.
You can't expect Altidore to do anything when the only player who can link up with him is Dempsey. If you're going to bunker and counter, use Bocanegra's leadership and defensive prowess. Use a guy like Beasley with speed to hit on the counter.
You can't just take 2 guys who are awful going forward, put them with a crazy person who is ok going forward and expect them to work as a 3-man midfield. I just can't get over this midfield.

According to the OPTA chalkboard, Jermaine Jones was tackled resulting in a loss of possession 17 times tonight.

That's horrendous for our linchpin player.
He also only completed 32 passes at a mediocre 71% completion rate. Thirty-two passes for a center mid. Xavi does that in five minutes.
Beckerman and Edu are getting most of the heat for this loss. The stats tell a different story. Edu and Beckerman were simply ineffective. Jones was detrimental to his team.

As far as I can see we have only 3 CMs that can recycle possession, drive the team through midfield, and create something: Bradley, Holden, and Torres. We all know Bradley and Holden are the two most talented midfielders we but Torres should be playing more. Torres may not be as good as the other two but he can do what our team is missing. Beckerman doesn't deserve to be on the squad. Jones runs around like a madman losing possession. Edu can at least tackle and make 5 yard passes and is athletic enough to break up counters. Another thing is we have no widemen. On the left it is not as bad because Johnson pushes up to provide width but we still need one or two players to step up and show something. Another thing is where is Eric Lichaj? He is getting some minutes for Villa and has shown he has the class to play for the national team. Klinsmann needs to find a formation and stick to it. Last night's 4-3-1-2 can be scrapped. We need to run a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. What's strange is Klinsmann is getting results against the big teams in the big games but struggles against less talented teams. There's definitely some things to work on but I think with a few improvements we can become a very formidable team in international play.

Didn't watch so this is just a guess. It sounds to me like he may have been pressing since he had no one near him who could do anything offensively. It's hard to complete a bunch of passes to Beckerman and Edu. Otherwise, he's having to try to force passes up the field which is always more dangerous.

To try to forge some of this width, we'll have to call in guys like Joe Gyau and Josh Gatt. You can only get away with the not having wide players if you are very good up the middle. Without Bradley, we have no chance of that being so.

Jones is a backup. When he and Bradley play together it is a detriment to Bradley. Jones just runs all over the field and tends to push further forward taking positions that Bradley is far effective in. 4-2-3-1 with a midfield that will sit back and almost act like another CB while Bradley has the freedom to run the team from the midfield.
