Nephew had his first game tonight. Sad that I won't be able to coach him this Spring, but my brother has the situation well in hand. We beat what is supposed to be the second best team in the league 16-1 tonight. Of course, it's u6, and you can't tell the kids not to score. We have 3 that can score at will.

Nephew is 1a in his league. Somehow 1b fell to us as the third pick in the draft. Probably has something to do with the fact he tried out in Wranglers and cowboy boots. They just run down the field passing the ball back and forth until they decide who is going to score this time.

But all the kids can move with the ball, and some of the kids who have been playing for awhile are finally realizing how to move without the ball. Well as much as a 5 year old can. They know where the ball is going to pop out and how to play defense. They don't get in each other's way.

We've got some funny kids though. One looks like a 5-year old version of Chunk from the Goonies. Just a chubby little kid with stubby little legs, but he tries hard. Kid never stops running and has a lot of fun. I was talking to his Dad after the game. His Dad was kind of disappointed he didn't score and wasn't as far along as the other kids.

I took a chance and said how I really feel. I said, "Matt, he ain't got much as far as top end speed, but he never stops pulling."

The Dad laughed.

Anyone else coaching this Spring?

I coach a U-13 boys team. I've been coaching the same team since Kindergarten. It is fun to watch the development of a team as time progresses. You will get quite a lot of satisfaction when you see your team hit their first cross or drop a pass backwards.

I keep thinking every year that this will be my last year to coach and then all of the older coaches tell me not to and that I will miss it more than I expect. So, for now I think I will hang in there until the players all know more than me.

I coached when I was an LSU student for 2-3 years and grew up running soccer camps in high school. Now my schedule doesn't allow me to coach but it is something I miss. Honestly I would love to just train a team and not worry about coaching.
