If the Ballon d'Or was decided by National Team performance, would Eduardo Vargas win it?

Forget the disallowed goal, this dude is unstoppable when he wears that Chile shirt. It's almost unexplainable.
Clearly Pulisic would be in the running too.

He'd be up there. One of those guys that struggles at times for his club team but is dynamite for the national team. Vargas is a beast when he suits up for Chile.
Altidore's goals-per-game ratio for the US is pretty solid. It was like 1 every 2 games not long ago. Don't know if it's still that good.

Luis Fabiano 2007-2010 won multiple of these fictional Ballons D'Ors based on his play for Brazil combined with his average play in Europe.

If Chile win the Confed Cup maybe....if they lose to Portugal the same guy would win in your fictional situation that will win it in real life.

Fred had a pretty dominant run for Brazil there for a bit

Milan Baros was all world for Czech Republic in the early 00s and meh at best for Liverpool and his other clubs.

The obvious ones are always strikers/AMs:
Bendtner for Denmark vs Arsenal
Jozy for USMNT vs Villareal/Hull
Gio dos Santos for Mexico vs Tottenham
Honorable mention (dropoff for club, but not as big):
Tim Cahill, Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Rodriguez

Dude was God at Euro 2004 after missing most of Liverpool's 03-04 season with a broken leg.

Surprised no one else has mentioned Forlan.
Honda, Donovan, Vargas, and Cahill are others that stood out to me as always balling out for their country.

Forlan won the European golden boot twice at the club level.

Honda and Cahill are great answers.

Definitely agree with those. I would add Podolski who is a fairly average club player but was amazing for Germany. Klose and Muller are a step above Podolski at the club level but really excel for the national team.
Others who come to mind would be Koller, Jorge Campos, and Nuno Gomes

WC 2010 was when I started following closely. That explains that gap in my knowledge.
