Aston Villa pops in my mind first... always like them, but there fans are fricking horrible.
Aston Villa definitely fit your criteria. Several years ago we were regularly challenging for Champions league spots in England under Martin O'Neil. Long story short we lost several of our best players(Barry,Milner,Laursen,Young) and our manager walked out on the club five days before the 2010-2011 season began. The last 2 seasons have seen horrible managerial decisions lead to relegation battles and two of the worst seasons in our proud clubs history.
This season we appointed Paul Lambert as our manager after he led Norwich to successive promotion from league 1 to championship to epl and then kept them in the epl. We've got a squad full of talented kids who graduated from our academy, 3 players we just signed from the eredivisie this summer, and 2 Americans(Guzan and Lichaj)
We have won the English league 7 times and we have won the Champions league (european cup) once.

Why don't you watch teams play and then pick a side. If you pick a mediocre team, this project won't last long.

Yup.
Saying you're gonna follow a team like Villa or Stoke, then watching them bomb, might turn you off of the league altogether.
Watch every league game that you can for a few months then make your decision. Heck, I watched MLS for an entire year before deciding on a team.

Not in the new globalized world of soccer. You absolutely need to have sustained success.
