Pretty good article that brings forward a lot of (albeit already known) issues about the structure of US player development and academies.

I think the real problem is a lack of quality academies around the country since there are really only ones where there is an MLS team. That is why I think in the future a promotion/relegation system will be implemented in the US, because that way more teams have support and the goal to get to the top flight, and so they will (hopefully) work to have good academies.

I don't see a relegation system ever coming into play with MLS, at least not anytime in the near future. MLS management and ownership are completely against it.
I do, however, see an alternative. An academy system along the lines of a minor league baseball farm system could be a real possibility. Look for MLS clubs to develop academies (or at the least relationships with academies) in multiple locations across the country.

Starting to happen already, DC United has a partnership with the Richmond Kickers.

Yeah this has already started happening, and the MLS reserve league is back so that's another step in the right direction.

our academies aren't nearly as sophisticated as our South American and European brothers. The only one that really compares is Bradenton.

my point really is. they aren't academies at all, the fact they use the term academy is laughable.
they're mostly just u18 and u19 select teams, with an MLS jersey slapped on their back

They don't offer residency (outside of Vancouver), but the actual development academy teams offer quite a bit more than your average select teams, which is why you've seen them become some of the best teams in the nation from being run-of-the mill select teams in <10 yrs.
