How many other free kicks aren't taken at the spot of the foul?
Well, goal kicks and corner kicks aren't taken where the ball goes out ... and those are technically direct free kicks.

It's also the only free kick that the defense can't set up a wall for.
Or kickoffs.

From June 1, there be will a change to the so-called "triple punishment" rule where a player can make a challenge that results in a penalty kick, a red card and suspension. IFAB said players should now be cautioned unless they are holding, pushing or pulling an opponent, not attempting to play the ball or for serious foul play and violent conduct.

Honestly shocked it hasn't been discussed here yet.

I could see the team taking out the lackluster player so he takes the shot and not the star striker.
With how easy it is for even the worst players to convert a PK, I don't see this ever happening.

Well if you want to argue semantics you could on a pk too, it would just be behind the ball and make zero since.
A pk is awarded for stopping a potential goal scoring opportunity. The team should get to pick whoever they want to finish ... after all, they earned the chance. I can see why others disagree. Just my opinion.
