If Arsenal becomes good then we'll be good.

We'll see how the summer plays out but, right now, I'd say Juventus is solidly better than Milan. Their defense is truly exceptional and you would imagine they'll upgrade quality depth a bit and bring in another elite striker.

The problem I have with putting Juve above Milan is the durability of Pirlo. I'm not sure he can continue at 100% effectiveness in all the competitions. I think Juve will have to do what Athletic did: prioritize the competitions.

Have you watched Dortmund this season? Pretty much owned Germany. With the exception of a group stage exit in CL, they looked like a team considerably better than Arsenal or Chelsea, IMO.

No, but i watched em lose to olympiakos and i watched bayern regularly lose in the league and then destroy top talent in the UCL.

They got big shoes to fill next august, we will see.

That's a good point about Pirlo's durability. I can't see them advancing deep in CL without him but with him they are better than Milan or probably any of those tier 2 teams.
However --and I hate it--Juve's really on a different level than Bilbao or Napoli as far as depth aside from Pirlo being irreplaceable. If either Bilboa of Napoli had Juve's 2nd team they'd be in CL this year.

I'm assuming the only prioritizing Juve will rteally have to do is buy some young talent (Like Verratti from Pescara or Cigarini from Atalanta) that can spell Pirlo against lower table clubs and in early Coppa Italia.

I agree that Dortmund's run in Bundesliga is really impressive, they have loads of young, talented players and they look like world beaters against Bayern.
However, many of us probably saw them play a handful of Bundesliga matches but also saw them get their asses handed to them by Marseilles, lose to Olympiacos and lose/draw with Arsenal. Based on that, it's hard to say they looked much better than Arsenal (or Marseilles for that matter) until they actually win a match against those teams.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do really well next year but it's hard to put them over those other clubs right now.

Their whole team is young and they had no experience in the champions league. Next year Reus will be there with Götze, Lewandowski was huge for them. They should have more depth and make a run.

I think Bayern, BvB, and Schalke will make a decent run next year.

Just wanted to bump this thread now that the season is coming up. I made a few changes to the tiers, what do y'all think?

ETA: my reasoning for this thread from the first post
quote:

So rather than ask "how do you rate the best teams in Europe" I figured this would be a better way to do it.

We can't all agree on whose best but we can (maybe) agree on who will be considered favorites for the tournament that decides who the best team in Europe is. Movement over the summer makes this list subject to change but I want to get everyone's opinion bearing in mind the seasons these clubs have just had and their potential to improve next year. Make sense?

Rate who you think will be the favorites, no need to include odds or anything like that but I think it makes sense to do it in tiers.

I think Juve belongs in a higher tier, but for the most part it looks about right.
