David Villa is still a really top class striker. Hell, he's going to Brazil with the greatest team off all time when everyone thought his national team duties were finished.
I'd say that a majority of the top-tier MLS clubs right now, aren't even fully utilizing a "sexy old man looking for a paycheck" designated player. Sporting Kansas City and Real Salt Lake won MLS Cups using solid Americans as foundations mixed with a few international misfits.
Granted the Galaxy won MLS Cup twice in a row, but their second Cup came after a very mediocre regular season. They twice faced the equivalent of the San Antonio Spurs of MLS, the Houston Dynamo in the final those years.
SCH is on some weird binge about the European reputation of the league. I could care less what fans of Norwich City think of MLS. I'd much rather watch some promising American players and a few decent international players, than wake up early to see a scintillating battle between Sunderland and Newcastle, even if its a rivalry. I barely enjoy watching the bigs teams play midtable teams, because the gulf in quality is so massive. It's boring most of the time. Then we get to hear the re-hashed narrative about how exciting it is when West Brom beats Chelsea, the seven or eight times that scenario happens a year.
Honestly, English football fans might be the most clueless about football outside of the British Islands.

Those EPL and other leagues matches are still higher quality

Do you like college football?
Do you like March Madness?
These are institutions that feature inferior athletes, and quality of play.

Bad example. From everything I saw they loved Kei Kamara for 2 months.

Rewatching the CL final. They confirmed that Raúl García had 17 goals this year.

You're right. What I was reading at the time only had league goals. Garcia had 4 goals each in both the Copa del Rey and UCL, plus 9 league goals = 17.

NYCFC twitter just made it official.
They had to put his name on the back of a T-shirt to hold up since they don't have a jersey yet.

So Villa vs Defoe for top goalscorer for the next 3 years?

Nope.
A foreign designated player has never been top goalscorer in MLS since the introduction of the rule.

Well BRadley Wright Phillips is top atm, and Defoe is 7 in 7 so its not outrageous to think that if he plays a whole season he would be top

6 in 7
Under your rules, we should expect Clint Dempsey to be top since he has 8 in 9

I thought it was 6 in 7 then checked espn to make sure I was right and they had 7 in 7
Dempsey would be in with a shout no doubt, and it wouldnt be ridiculous to make that arguement either.

I have no idea how ESPN is as wrong as they are sometimes
I actually think Jermain Defoe will have a decent chance to lead the league in scoring this year. TFC have a couple of games in hand, and Ryan Nelsen doesn't really expect him to do anything but walk around and turn half chances into goals though I'm not sure that you could expect Defoe to do anything else
