Agreed. We're on a good run overall (haven't lost in 7, won 6 in a row)
Feb 3rd @ City will be really crucial and then the return game March 22nd against Arsenal.

Poor Portsmouth… Once proud team, wallowing in filth.
ETA: I love Juan Mata (:maybehomo:) and I'm going to be pissed if we sell him, but I'll be extra pissed if we sell him to Utd.
I just don't understand how Mourinho rates Willian and Schürrle higher than Mata. Our 3 advanced midfielders all rotate interchangeably throughout the match; how is it impossible to start
Hazard----Mata----Oscar
on a regular basis? Even if Jose's style is to have the outside AMs play more like wingers, Hazard and Oscar can do that. To me, that's a deadly combo as any attacking midfield in the world. Now that De Bruyne is gone all you have to do is rotate Willian and Schürrle in and you essentially never lose a step. It baffles me.
What's wrong with this?

Oscar can do that.
He wants Oscar playing up the middle.
I know it's frustrating. I <3 Mata too. I may cry real life tears but I trust Jose and love Chelsea more.

I don't like it, I don't like it one bit.

Hard to argue much with the results lately but Mata has so much more quality than Willian. Yea Willian runs his tail off and I appreciate that as much as anyone but do we really need two guys in the squad to do that every match?
Bring on Willian if you want to protect a lead or if we need to be more defensive, but at home and in times when we need a goal give me Mata all day everyday.

Completely agree, regardless of my feelings for Mata

I don't think you're giving Willian enough credit. His versatility is awesome. I never see him frick up.

Yes, actually, because of the system José has employed.
José wants our attacking midfielders to press high up the pitch and put in a good shift defensively. Willian does this to perfection, and so does Oscar. Hazard also has been very solid defensively so far as well. Willian, Oscar, and Eden all play right in to the kind of system José wants to institute at Chelsea, and Juan Mata, not so much, which sucks. I do wish he would get a few more starts in place of Oscar against sides that park the bus but it is what it is...
In the first 40 seconds of this video, there are 3 instances of Willian's defensive play and the whole video is good and shows what he does well (obviously).

Willian is necessary to Mourinho's success. Oscar would be the one Mata would replace. But he won't.
Mourinho's system requires:
1. A pivot with a dedicated holder. Recently it has been either Luiz or Mikel partnering Ramires or Lampard, but I'm sure Matic will assume this role soon enough. Luiz/Mikel are able to partner with the CBs on a counter, forming a triangle in the center of defense, protecting the back four. This is why Chelsea's defense has improved so much compared to the Ramires and Lampard partnership, where neither are positionally astute enough to cover the space in front of the CBs.
2. Excellent wide players. Hazard and Willian assume this role. They have the motors to track back on a counter, and then pull the full-backs toward the halfway line when in possession.
3. A positionally excellent attacking midfielder. Oscar assumes the Ozil role of Mourinho's RM side. Hazard and Willian are good enough with the ball at their feet to draw the fullbacks toward them, opening the channels for Oscar to run into. Oscar does this willingly, while also providing a workrate in pressing and defense.
That is why Mata is dispensable. He would be useless on the wing in a Mourinho side. While technically and creatively brilliant, he isn't someone to beat a man or burn them with pace. He won't open those channels for Oscar. He also doesn't have the defensive workrate, or the pressing ability, and thus won't replace Oscar.
Instead, he is £40m on the bench that Chelsea are waiting to cash in on. I imagine Mou would love to put that money towards another CB and LB.

Apparently I'm not. Most people I talk to seem very impressed with him but I feel like he gives the ball away far too often. Like I said, I appreciate his work rate but he still frustrates me far too often with the ball.
With that said it's highly possible/probable I'm overly critical of him, and Oscar to some degree, because I want Mata to on the field and look for reasons that he should be.

Something Ozil never did... i think this is what separates him and mata...

I could see us getting an LB, Luke Shaw most likely, but I don't know about CB. I doubt David Luiz will play in the MF anymore now that Matic is here and Cahill, even though I am usually hard on him, has been solid as well recently. Ivanovic can also play CB..
I want us to spend money from a potential Mata sale on Luke Shaw or another young LB and maybe Paul Pogba or Ilkay Gündogan, and then recall Victor Moses and possibly either Thorgan Hazard or Lucas Piazon.

I would love this. He would seem to fit in the pivots with matic. This would allow for great connections from defense to the higher players. I see this as a strong upgrade here over Ramires playing this role.

If you can't beat him, buy him?
Win today earns us a City draw in the 5th round. I feel like this is the 30th time in the last 5 years we've drawn City in the early stages of a cup.
