In American football, "offside" is "don't cross the line before you're allowed."

In soccer, attackers can't cross the line before they're allowed (when the ball leaves a teammate's foot).

In American football, the line is static and set before each play.

In soccer the line moves, and is attached to the back foot of the last defender closest to the goal. (It's really the second to last defender - but 99.9% of the time, the goalkeeper is the defender closest to the goal.)

Start imagining that line with the "last" defender all the time, and you'll pick it up pretty quick. Once you can see it, you kind of can't unsee it.

IFAB has clearly stated the PIAOP must either play the ball or prevent a defender from playing the ball to be guilty of an offside offense. Sophia Smith did neither and, therefore, is not offside; the goal was correctly awarded.

Most youth matches are refereed differently and that action would be whistled for offside.

This is a good point and somewhat understandable. Its been years since I played but I could count on one finger the times I remember a player who was definitely in an offside position not attempt to play a ball (that they could actually get to) because they knew they were off. Its honestly pretty amazing the awareness of high level players who do this, it goes against every natural instinct, especially for attacking players.

you’re right but that’s pretty rare.

The opposite is true. Every long ball ruled as offside would have the ball pass the second to last defender well after the offending player does.

Attacking player can't have any part of their body that can legally score a goal past the last defender prior to ball being played when in attacking half. Think hockey- the blue line is always the last defender however in soccer in moves with the last defender.
