Arsenal have never sold their best player to a direct competitor. Liverpool won't either.
But, I am in a perpetual state of desire. The more I deny it the less chance it has of happening /s

Well I don't know about best but we've sold good players to rivals before. Van Persie, Frank Stapleton, Michael Thomas, Viv Anderson among others. But I see your point. And I don't think Suarez will move ever, unless he refuses to play anymore for Liverpool, which I don't think will happen.

Nasri to City, who finished 3 pts above us that year.
Ashley Cole to Chelsea
hell, i'd even say RvP, because it was always our plan that last year would be our last lean spending year. maybe at the time, just for that year, we weren't direct competitors (though if we had him, they didn't, we might've been).

Neither United, City nor Chelsea are direct competitors to Arsenal. Arsenal have not been title contenders the past few seasons. They aren't competing with those 3 clubs for anything other than cups. Arsene knows his direct competition for 4th (a trophy in itself) is LFC and Tottenham. He would never sell his best player to either of those sides.
Selling to United and City doesn't mean much. They are top 3 locks with or without RVP/Nasri.
With Suarez, Arsenal is a top 4 lock. Without him Arsenal aren't. Simple as that and that's why BR won't sell (unless a huge offer comes in, like I've said all along).

Yes they are. The last two seasons we haven't competed on a top level, but in 2009-10 and 2010-11 we were top two until late season collapses. The last two seasons we've completely rebuilt the squad, akin to 2005 through 2007. The 2007-2008 team was awesome and deserved a trophy, but again we had a late season collapse that dropped us down the table. The last two seasons are definitely aberrations.

And for the last third of the season we were playing better than any of the top four.
We are always going to be a lock for a top four position because of Wenger. No one gets more out of average players. Hell the only reason we create more chances than most teams is because of Wenger's philosophy. I mean, we've had some awful teams. The 2005-06 was terrible. The 2011-12 team wasn't very good without Wenger. The 2012-2013 iteration, on paper, was Wenger's worst team ever, but once we gelled, had title winning form. Wenger is a difference maker in a gigantic, almost unmeasurable way.

Not since they've sold Nasri or RvP to City/United. I know good and well the years Arsenal had a title winning squad. I'm specifically addressing when the players were sold, who they were sold to, and the effect it would have on the upcoming season.
If Arsenal would have had a title winning squad going in to 11/12 or 12/13, Arsene wouldn't have sold RVP/Nasri to United/City.

that's silly. we're certainly competition this season. if you think our two clubs are competition, you should think we're competition with them. we weren't gloom and doom for any of those sales except rvp last year.

if you sell Suarez to us, you aren't our direct competition. your definition is defeating your point.

That's only two years. And Nasri was leaving before Cesc. The contract offer from Man City was just too good to turn down. Like I said, those years were aberrations. The 8-2 defeat at Man U showed Wenger he couldn't rely on youth solely. Since then the buying pattern has changed significantly. The squad has been completely rebuilt in two years. We are very close to having a really good team.

Exactly. Wenger knew he could sell to United/City and still qualify for the CL. He took a chance and sold assets in order to reinvest and build a new squad. He knew he wouldn't be directly competing with United/City for anything those two seasons, even with RvP and Nasri. It was a calculated risk - one that paid off beautifully.
Similarly, Rodgers would sell to Chelsea/City. He knows we aren't competing with them for anything, and he also knows Suarez's departure from LFC is likely a matter of when rather than if. Moreover, he knows selling assets would go a long way in rebuilding the squad.
Consequently, he won't sell to Arsenal. Why? He knows if Suarez is sold to Arsenal, the Gunners become a title contender. He knows if the Gunners become a title contender, suddenly he has to fight Arsenal, City, United, Chelsea and Tottenham all for fourth place. He knows that, barring some ridiculous transfer fee, the measly £40m he could get from Arsenal won't be enough to climb into the tier that the aforementioned would be in.

We haven't been the past few seasons, that's the point. But you can bet your arse BR views Arsenal as the most vulnerable of the current top 4 - hence the Gunners being his competition.

He would be silly to really think this. Wenger is a more proven coach than any of the other top four teams, with Mourinho being as proven. The season to supplant Arsenal was 2011-12, when we were at our weakest, not now that our frugality will start paying dividends. In fact, I think we are in our strongest position since the Invincible team.
In my view, the big money clubs, Pool, Tottenham, Arsenal, City, United, and Chelsea are almost certainly rivals with one another. I think we are a difference maker plus depth away from title contention.

Obviously it was a risk, but this is the second time since 2005 he's basically rebuilt a squad. In the third season after each rebuilding process began the team gelled and was very good. I can see that happening again, just based on the players we have now. I think we have an outside shot at the title with our squad right now.

You may be, but you aren't yet, and BR isn't going to sacrifice his best player for you to do so, alienating him from the pack in the process.

I agree, which is why I've never believed Suarez was a real possibility. And the chance exists that this difference maker plus the depth we need will come from within. Suarez is more of a sure thing, hence why I think he's worth the price tag. Wenger could take a calculated risk and hope Wilshere lives up to his massive potential this season, but Wenger realizes that each of our late season collapses has come from a lack of quality depth. Even with depth and a bit of injury luck we could compete for trophies this season.
