Nice goal Arshavin after a miscue from the Villa defense. Then a great pass to Nasri which could have been 2 within a minute. Arsenal dominating but only up 1.

Pires starting for Villa. He's shown a couple flashes of his old self.

Nasri makes it two! Volley off a corner took a deflection into the back of the net. This came right after Friedel made a great save denying a Chamakh header.

Todd Blackledge-esque report on the food at the stadium.

Looks like they eat pretty much the same things as we do--except for the steak & kidney pies.

I was thinking the same thing. I also haven't seen hot tea at any American stadiums. Those burgers and bacon looked delicious.

Here it goes again. Sloppy defending. Great volley by Ciaran Clark. Carew was offsides in Fabianski's line of vision. Oh well. 2-1.

That was offsides. Great shot of Fabianski trying to look around Carew. Villa looking a lot better this half. Ashley Young owning Clichy.

Wilshere makes it 4-2 with a header from an unselfish Chamakh cross. First PL goal with Arsenal for the youngster. We won!

I watched the whole game. Why did it take so long for Wenger to sub when things were clearly turning in the second half?

I don't know, but I personally hated the subs at the time. They ended up working out fine. The one good point Efan Ekoku made this morning was that even if we bring in defensive subs, that isn't going to correct our main defensive flaw, not having a commanding CB (or two) and any sort of defensive mindset. Bringing on players that change our style doesn't help us being tactically and personnel wise, we aren't ever going to be a team that can successfully have 11 men behind the ball. Would have liked to see Walcott come on as a counterattacking threat, but Gibbs actually did better than I though he would in that regard.

Also, I forgot to say: THAT was a vintage Arshavin game. We need him to keep steping up if we are going to challenge for the title.

God, their second goal was a perfect example of what our problem has been: a reluctance for the backline to break their shape, no one wanting to take responsibility for closing in on the ball. Clichy shied away from the ball and retreated. Granted it might not have been an issue because Fabianski's vision was blocked, but still, that's happened countless times.

Yes, Arshavin had a wonderful game. He was MOTM, imo, maybe for sentimental reasons of a return to a vintage display. Nasri also a strong contender, as well as Chamakh creating constant problems for Villa's defense. We finally played the attacking game we like to play. Fabregas being absent wasn't a visible concern.

Hope our scouts are working over time to find a CB. Koscielney had some great stops and tackles today.

Kos is a decent player. I wouldn't mind him as our 3rd CB. I like the way he plays most of the time, I just don't think he has the physical ability to back it up against better strikers.

Obviously from my past comments I'm all for adding a CB or two. Who are some viable candidates?

I've heard a few names tossed around: Mexes (whom we've been linked with for about a decade so there is also skepticism at that suggestion), Subotic, and Mamadou Sakho.

Other than that I haven't kept my ear to the ground too much for the transfer window. It will be a disgrace if we don't pick up somebody. Either that or Tommy V needs to make a quick recovery, which I don't think seems likely.

Thing is we have banked on Tommy V, who by all intents and purposes is solid and very good on offense, but that being said, he isn't a certifiable lock down CB who can handle these top notch PFL strikers. Arsenal has needed a CB upgrade even over Tommy V for a while now. We all know it is very unlikely to happen though, so until Wenger is released (this summer?) it wont happen.

tommy v is who we need back. squilaci/kos are not used to PL defending yet but will be great recruits in a year or two. then we will be thanking wenger for these signings. but these defenders need someone to lead from the front with experience. thats why we need tommy v back.
Really badly hope RVP and tommy v are fully fit for old trafford.
