I'm a Grade 8 USSF certified referee in GA. Been doing it off and on for 30 years after my playing career ended.

Also refereed college (D2 and D3) for 2 or 3 years before job travel demands made it impossible.

Grade 8 ref in Louisiana. Been reffing since 1999 in which I was 12 when i took the course. Still ref comp and rec games at my local club.

Yeah it was nice when it was just that. This was process for new refs last year: online courses you have to complete, in person classroom which by me was a Friday evening 6-9pm and Saturday 8am-5pm which is when they took test. Also you have to complete concussion test along with this safesport stuff. Legit shitshow though to renew every year.
