I knew Florida had no state income taxes, but I figured their property taxes were high like in Texas. Is that not so?
Nah, our rate is like half of Texas. We have high tourism.
We also have homestead exemptions if it's your permanent resident. That takes 25k off the assessment of the first 50k assessed. It can be slightly more than 25k depending on inflation. That can knock a decent chunk off your final bill.
Especially in rural areas where property values aren't that high and assessments are always much lower.
There has been talk about removing it completely. I hope it happens.
California has lower rates than Texas, down near Florida's. However, due to the housing market the taxes you pay are still much much higher even though technically the % is comparable.
For example, I lived in a house that was 7 figures when I lived in San Jose. I had a house basically inside the city, with a fenced in backyard etc. But despite it's value, it was really just a house that would sell for $250-$300k in the south. 3 bed, 2 bath ranch with a 2 car garage. So even though the rates are comparable, the amount paid in California is much much higher.
I buy property in Florida and there have been a few times when I had to pay a properties back property taxes. I've never paid one over $500 and that includes some with multiple years.

Unless you want to freeze your arse off in Montana, Wyoming, or the Dakotas, just have to manage the fatigue here.

Nah. The rest of us have 2.9 kids so we're used to it.
