Why Trump needed to cave?

Let’s start with Pelosi

Pelosi is basically saying, you’re not going to cause gov’t shutdowns and hold federal workers hostage any time you don’t get your way. She realizes they will need to make a deal on border barricades within the next 3 weeks. The question is what will she take as a concession? Idk if temporary status for DACA will be enough?

Trumps View

On the other hand, Trump won’t hesitate to shut this puppy down again if they balk on his wall. The base will accept nothing less than $5 billion in funding for starters. Why did Trump cave? Because FAA was beginning to shut down airports due to lack of workers. LaGuardia was closing incoming flights and several large airports were about to follow suit. On Monday the market would of probably taken another 1,000 point dive. Trump had made his point.

Decision

Winner: No question this round goes to Pelosi. But the Dems need to brace themselves because there will be funding for Trumps Wall in next 3 weeks. This shutdown was on Trump but the next one will be on Democrats if they don’t follow through on these negotiations. The question becomes what can Pelosi get to cover her flank on the left in the coming weeks? As I mentioned, temporary status for DACA probably won’t be enough because the base will point to those protections being in place before Trump became President, so that would be a net win for Trump.

Not sure why you think they NEED to make a deal.

Why would she give him anything? What's he going to do, shut down the government again? That was a massive failure of a negotiation tactic.

Again, simply standing there and saying NO was 100% effective. They have nothing to gain by giving him anything from here on out.

They won't.

Permanent for all DACA-eligible, maybe. Temporary is a non-starter.

Yes, I don’t think there is any question Trump will shut it down again. If you read the “tea leaves” Pelosi is ready to deal. Her issue was the Dems couldn’t be held hostage by Trump. She earned her points with the left and now she is going to need to negotiate the best deal they can make.

Permanent status would require $30-$40 billion via full funding because of Congress not following through on amnesty in the past. I think both sides would be happy. That’s a huge win for Democrats and both sides can claim victory.

Back to the original deal - $25B for the wall in exchange for full path to citizenship for all DACA-eligibles and he stops fricking with TPS deportations.

And no more kids in cages.

But we all know Trump can't agree to that, even for his big beautiful wall.

This goes far beyond Pelosi. This is where Dems start building steam for 2020 and they're not going to dabble in any negotiations with Trump.

I’m with you but read my other post 30-40 billion full funding for Wall because of past deals involving amnesty. Trump has one shot for full funding of wall.

We built a barrier under Bush and Obama. Nobody talked about it much. Trump opens his big diarrhea mouth and now he gets no wall after enduring the longest shutdown ever

You can't make this stuff up

Tell me again about his stable genius and his deal making skills

I honestly think if he were to give DACA-eligible kids a full path to citizenship and stop putting kids in cages at the border he could name his number for wall funding, and Dems couldn't turn it down or their base would lose their shite.

Because even if the wall is 'funded' it won't be built before 2021, so it will never really be built. There are eminent domain cases from when W was in office around border fencing that are still working through the courts.

Trump offers 40 billion for full citizenship for DACA and the Dems don’t take it? Dude there would be epic backlash from Hispanic community.

He got played. Bottom line.

They got what they wanted (gov't back open) and another delay.

Your logic is wrong. The Dems will not give Trump what he wants. Trump will declare a national emergency and re-purpose funds from other programs for the wall which will be unpopular. The OP will like it, but 60% of voting America will not.

So break one promise to keep another? It may be his best play depending on the wall backlash but that's giving the other side tons of political capital
