I know better then to cherry pick and form my opinion on an extremely complex subject from a partisan propaganda youtube channel posting a 5 minute video using a single source that just happens to align with the channels biases.

If you think the OP suffices as a determinant to the facts and truth of a matter such as 60 years of political strategy and voting dynamics, it says more about you then anything.
The fairest and most honest answer is that the south was poised to trend republican and they noticed it and used a controversial strategy to speed that trend along.

What is the basis for why they were poised to trend Republican(just more slowly) all the way to where we are now in your mind?

I think one of the more convincing arguments is that Republicans, in addition to a strategy of dog whistling, embraced social conservatism in other areas. Economics and class remained a losing battle for some time. Except with the affluent group that was already predominately Republican. But as Democrats trended away from social conservatism, Republicans forged alliances with religious groups and pursued things like the moral majority.

The democratic party becoming more liberal on key social issues such as abortion and crime.

The south's trend away from the democrats occurred at the same time (1970s and 1980s) that the party was going through lots of messy in-fighting and messaging issues.
