Because they worship false gods.
Even atheist/agnostic conservatives still "worship" a true "God" whatever they call it, Liberty, capitalism, etc. They are generally consistent.

I think the issue is that one side can’t believe the other side could be happy if they don’t think look and believe the things they do. I think in a way conservatives are happier on the surface.

Because their solution for everything is for someone else to do "it." They refuse to look inward and on self reliance to solve their problems, so they try to control others.
