Texas could turn blue only when the democrats end their war on oil and the 2nd amendment. Until then Texas stays red.

If that were the case, they would've fought harder against mass immigration instead of siding with the corporate sector to crush unions and wages. A fiscally moderate, socially conservative party would've been unbeatable, this is what Nixon wanted; probably why HW set him up with Watergate

Governor Abbott's removal of straight ticket voting from elections in Texas will keep this from happening. A lot of the problems in Texas right now are caused by straight ticket Democrat voters.
If he takes the Ohio approach (removing party affiliations from the ballot altogether), it's over.

I think in 1976 Texas delivered the POTUS to Jimmy Carter
Texas and the entire south were 'blue' at that time. Reagan's election broke the Democrats choke hold on the south and led the 'red' wave.

Correct. The term they used was "the Solid South".
quote:
Building the Solid South
With the end of Reconstruction, white Southerners were free to take back state governments, largely by intimidating blacks from going to the polls, ensuring that Democrats would win state legislatures and governorships. Southern Republicans, largely supported by black voters, were voted out of office. A desire to maintain a white supremacist culture, plus anger over the Republican-led prosecution of the Civil War, solidified Democratic loyalties among southern whites. The key to maintaining this new 'Solid South' was keeping African Americans from voting, as black Americans were strong supporters of the Republican Party at the time. Southern governments passed a number of laws that made it almost impossible for blacks to vote. This included poll taxes, which many blacks could not afford to pay, as well as literacy tests. States also used grandfather clauses, which stated that voters could not vote if their grandfather also did not have the right to vote, which prevented many African Americans from voting since their grandfathers had been slaves and had no voting rights. These were known as the Jim Crow laws.

Take a look at how the national debt reacts to the 19th amendment. I am not saying, just saying...

Democrats would never win another election if party affilation were removed from ballots nationwide.

Back then Texas was probably like 5% Hispanic
I'm Hispanic, most of the ones I know in the south are pretty conservative or at least in the middle. Other places, like out west, and I'm talking California, Washington, Arizona, they can be pretty liberal. Texas has a pretty strong conservative stance in the hispanic population. What's odd is, most of us are registered D but majority of the ones I know vote R, and they are usually pretty open about it.

Cool, but numbers show that definitely isn't the case for most Hispanics. Texas will be the California of the South when whites become the minority. On average I'd say "Hispanics" are more conservatives than "whites" on social issues; but they've been taught to hate whites and the GOP will always be seen as the implicitly white party, so I can't see a large-scale defection

Well I guess we'll just see. If it happens it happens, but I don't see it happening in the next 20-25 years. Again if it does whatever.

This simply isn't true. I've got a list a mile long of hispanic friends and relatives from all walks of life. I'm not saying 0% are brought up that way, but I can assure you it's much less than you think.

Texas will vote for AOC in 2028.

Pretty soon. A friend in the Collin County Republican Party told me Collin County was rapidly turning purple. The Party is worried that Collin County could go blue in 2020. A lot of Californians and others from Blue States moves in with Toyota. Also, a lot of Asians and Hispanics have moved in. I would not be surprised to see Texas barely red or slightly blue in 2020. The state has changed dramatically from 2016.
Posted on 6/14/20 at 4:54 pm to windshieldman
I think Texas is already north of 40% Hispanic now, but they have very, very low turnout rates; which is probably why the state isn't viewed as purple yet. Young people are also less likely to vote, and Hispanics + other immigrant groups make up the majority of that segment; hence I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a sea-change within the next decade. Otoh this might be delayed if conservatives can uphold strict voter ID laws.
Repubs could probably attract more Hispanic voters like they did Asians in the past, I think that would take decades through.

You have very little in common with Mexicans who have crossed the Rio Grande and live 10-15 packed into an apartment, and their American-born children... wouldn’t you say?

Austin Texas seems to be full of blue pixies.

Parents are legal, but grew up and was friends with many who weren't. Spent much time and even lived after HS with Hispanics in that same environment.
