When Aaron Schwartz got suicided.
I would say 2015 was the turning point though when Coontown and FatPeopleHate got banned. Those were the first subs to be banned under "hate speech" violations. That opened the flood gates.
Also Correct the Record(aka ShareBlue) pays the moderators on a lot of subs and owns /r/politics outright
