Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt is taking senior status, giving President Donald Trump the chance to name another member to the New Orleans-based bench that hears appeals from three states.

Engelhardt wrote Trump Tuesday of his intentions to retire and take on a lighter caseload by December 31 unless a successor is seated earlier.
