Well, the idea is IG's are supposed to be autonomous and free of influence from the executive branch so they can do their job. That's not exactly a bad idea.
However, Obama started interfering and firing them. Precedent set. Another thing Obama corrupted. So is Trump setting them straight again? Would like to see them go back to being truly independent.
Dealt with the EPA IG last year regarding the Jackson water crisis. They came into town and actually did a thorough investigation . But then when Washington got to put its fingerprints on it. the IG blamed the Health Department even though the health department had been complaining to the EPA for years about Jackson's refusal to comply with the law. It was a familiar story with the EPA. The Region IV EPA office would crack down on Jackson or try to but the DC bunch, led by Regan, protected Jackson and the Mayor every step of the way. Regan wasn't about to let someone who looked like him with the same politics get in trouble .
