This is especially true in wars in which the besieged is under existential threat, which is not the case with Russia. The Russian people know that this is an elected war of Putin’s. Putin is selling that they had to stop NATO encroachment, but the Russian people, like all people in that region, want to become part of the West. They know that NATO encroachment is a threat to Putin, not to themselves. Putin is pitting patriotism against self-interest. That is why the West thinks that the people can be brought around. But the Russian people have historically been able to stomach incredible suffering. I don’t know how it would work out. The West could certainly win it if they were as resolute, but they are not.
