I’ll start this by saying I didn’t vote for Trump. I detest his rhetoric as I think it’s toxic. I know some like him for that, but I don’t. With that being said, if you remove the rhetoric from the equation, then I think he’s done more good than bad.

At the same time, rhetoric does matter. The media continually says his words matter, and I agree. That’s why it bothers me to see him accused of being racist. Is he a bully? Yeah. Misogynistic? Probably. I don’t see the racism though. The commercial he tweeted out today has been labeled racist. I don’t see it though. It’s xenophobic as hell as I think a lot of his stuff is, but it seems the media and others conflate xenophobia and racism. They are not the same though.

Just because he says things that are xenophobic doesn’t make him racist. Words have meanings. If we are not all working from the same definitions then we can’t possibly have an intelligent conversation. Racist is about the worst thing you can call someone today. You can’t soften the meaning of the words to encompass more people.

As someone who is not a fan of Trump’s talk, I should be good with others calling him racist. I’m not though as I think it hurts the credibility of legitimate arguments you can make against him.

Am I completely wrong in not seeing this commercial as racist?

You said it much more succinctly than I but that’s a good way to put it.

I don't see where not wanting open borders equals xenophobia. We should control who comes into our country.

I agree completely. Wanting to stop illegal immigration is not xenophobic. When you use language to stir up an irrational fear of those illegal immigrants, that is xenophobia. I’m not aware of any evidence that shows illegal immigrants commit crimes at a higher rate than citizens but he makes it out that they are all violent criminals.

The crime rate among illegal immigrants is 100% by the definition of illegal immigrant.

Irrational fear? Irrational fear of what? Armed foreigners marching on your border? Are you saying they are harmless or you shouldn't fear them because the military will take care of them if they attack?

Of course it is. That’s a semantic point though and clearly not what I was referring to.

Who are they going to attack and to what end? If they are truly looking for asylum, then attacking Americans on site in an armed invasion is a definite way to not get it. If your argument is they are coming to attack our country as an invasion force, that makes no sense. That is a suicide mission with no chance of success. No one would do that.

No he doesn't. He says some are. He goes out of his way to make sure he doesn't say all illegals are violent, or all immigrants are bad people.

An invasion doesn't necessarily include armed confrontation, either.

Fair enough. Do you think the average person hearing him on this takes his point to be that they are no more violent, statistically, than the average citizen? That’s what the stats show, but I don’t believe they take his words that way.

Do yourself a favor.

Make two columns on a piece of paper.

Write down all the things Trump has said on one side.

Write down all the violent and racist rhetoric said by the left on the other side.

Now, do not put any names on the paper. Pass it around to your friends, and ask them to tell you which side has said the most hateful/racist/ignorant/violent things.

If they are looking for asylum, they can't march across other countries to do it. That isn't how it works. The process for declaring asylum has been covered several times on this board recently.

So...you are creating a hypothetical that cannot happen to justify your labeling.
