Deputy Josh Sapp never grew out of his childhood dream to be a police officer, yet when his law enforcement career began, he learned aspirations sometimes come at a price. “The first day at my local county sheriff’s office was not a positive experience,” Josh remembers. “They partnered me with a Sergeant who showed me around.” ‘Did you know this other deputy on our force is gay?’ he asked as we drove back to the office. ‘Everyone does,’ I replied. ‘Well, I don’t know if you are. But the only reason he’s still here is because he is hard worker.’ “My dream was quickly crushed. I kept the fact I was gay a secret and began looking for something different.” After noticing that the Broward Sheriff’s Office changed the colors of their online logo to reflect LGBT Pride Month, Josh reached out to a friend who was also gay and served as a BSO deputy. “The first thing he said was ‘They don’t have a problem with anyone being gay. I recognized that this sheriff’s office doesn’t care where you come from, as long as you are a deputy with honesty, integrity, and professionalism.” Josh started his career at BSO and is now assigned to the DUI Task Force, working with an important team of deputies to keep drunk or impaired drivers off our roadways. “All I ever really wanted was to come to work and do my job without prejudice or persecution. BSO is the only place I’ve seen that allows me to do so. While it took me a long time to find my home, I’m finally here. I don’t have to hide who I am.” Josh is BSO. You could be too.
