The Legislature Is Responsible For The B R Budget / City of St George Debacle

Brief history lesson: 20 or years ago, the part of Baton Rouge known as Central wanted to leave the EBR Parish School System and form its own district. When their proposal was presented to the legislature, it was voted down because "they're not even a city, so how can they have a separate school system?"
From that rejection, using the legislature's own argument, a move to incorporate Central was born, voters of this area approved it, and 2 - 3 years later, the Central School System was born. When the St George area also wanted to break away from the EBR School System, people in that area used the same approach as Central.
Regardless of your feelings on the City of St George, whether for or against, had the legislature used common sense 20 years ago, both Central AND St George might well still be a part of the unincorporated portion of EBR Parish, and all of the financial turmoil, hard feelings on both sides, etc, could have been avoided.
Sometimes I wonder if our elected leaders know they should seek shelter when it begins raining.
